My son’s class is collecting a “shape museum” (just like his sister’s class did 3 years ago). Basically this means they’re supposed to bring in examples of 3D shapes that they can discuss in class – you know, stuff like boxes, cones, like that. For us, this year’s shapes were a graham cracker box and an empty paper towel tube – pretty boring.

This morning, though, I had a moment of creative energy (probably comes from taking the day off) and decided to send a Möbius strip along as well:

For those of you who don’t know, the quick and dirty about a Möbius strip is that it’s essentially a three-dimensional shape with only one side and one edge. Also, curiously, if you cut a Möbius strip straight through it’s middle the result is still one piece.

The significance of the Möbius strip to me, personally, is that my father explained the Möbius strip to me when I was around my son’s age. I remember the physical surrounding fairly well, though they don’t match any house I remember living in. I also don’t remember what brought the subject up or why we were talking about it. But every time I see a Möbius strip I think of my father.
