Cori,

I'll just tack on a bit to what Ashley said. Social Sites does 4 things for SharePoint:
 - Bring in content from many feeds, filtered and focused for a site with the ability to mark things read and tag items
 - Easy, one-click subscription and routing of SharePoint changes - I have SharePoint blog posts going to a desktop notifier and document library changes going to my blackberry for example
 - Better discovery and usability - Social Sites provides a quick scan page including a tag cloud (you can put the tag cloud web part on any / all of your team sites), a view of the top moving feeds, and most active users
 - Easy discovery of expertise and interests. You can click on an author or tagger's name to get a mini profile or view a full profile page and see tags, top subscriptions, saved items, and more for that user

Hopefully all that doesn't sound too "salesy", but I just wanted to point out that there's a lot going on in Social Sites. We have a SharePoint MVP on staff and focused the entire enterprise development team on this to build it out (leveraging a ton of capability we had in our enterprise RSS server). One other note - the $20K price is an approximation - the actual price scales with total seats.

If you're still curious after all this :) please check out the 90-second video on our product page at:

Thx,

So you're saying that 6% of 18-and-older US residents who go online once a *month* use Twitter regularly?!? Oi, that's even *more* crazy.

Listen, Peter, I wasn't trying to attack you as a person, but instead point out the wackiness of your numbers and the fact that we as readers have no way to evaluate your claims. I'm not arguing the validity of Forrester's business model (which I think is fine) but instead the fact the you're not backing up your claims, or if you are it's somewhere that substantially less than 6% of US online adults can see it.

As for what the real numbers are, I don't really care. And I don't feel any need to show any proof because I'm not making outlandish claims.

"Adults" defined as 18+ who report going online monthly. The report is client-access only because the company I work for makes money by providing data and advice to clients. As you so boldly claim, if the number is not 6% then what is it? And where is your proof?

Hey David;

Yep, I've had Ubuntu and Edubuntu installs running on a laptop for my daughter a few times over the past few months - actually if you look at my archives you'll see more recent posts regarding networking in Ubuntu, unless I'm much mistaken (but I'm too lazy to go look).

In fact my daughter loved Ubuntu and it's cousins, and if it weren't for the fact that that particular laptop's HD was dying and that I stumbled upon an iMac for her to use, we'd still be using it. For now though, we're a Windows/Mac household.

Who knows - I'm looking for a home server of some sort - perhaps Gutsy will be my OS.

Cori,

Social Sites is indeed based on RSS, but it's not really an "RSS" solution. You got it right that it enhances the existing social networking functionality within SharePoint (but also WSSv3). It's also a great solution to surface what's going on in my organization. We have some really nice rollup views into SharePoint that help people discover other people and discover content within SharePoint. To date, most people's answer to content discovery in organizations has been "just search for it." But, it's also effective to be able to grasp what's going on organically at a quick glance.

Check out Jeff's post here for some additional insights: http://jeffnolan.com/wp/2007/10/17/newsgator-social-sites-launches/

Would love to give you a demo any time, just drop me a line.

Thanks for the post!

Marijuana is a far cry from being a schedule one drug. The generation of the 60's are well aware that marijuana is is not a dangerous drug and should not be classified in the same category as herion. Criminal Justice educational books educate law enforcement students on the history of marijuana in regards to the US. It was an attempt to regain jobs back from the mexican population to the white population. Officials targeted marijuana only because it was the spanish group's drug of choice, and in their efforts the politicians ranted and raved of marijuana being a dangerous drug. Politicians gave marijuana its bad name for policial reasons only. If a man chooses to have a beer at the end of his day or a joint it should be his choice.

So this comment is a little bit anticlimactic now, but I wanted to mention that I saw that Bob Dylan video a few years ago, maybe on some TV special, and I had the exact same reaction: "Oh so INXS got this from Dylan?" I always thought it was a cool INXS video too.

On a related note, I happened to be driving somewhere a few months ago and the radio was playing an hour of INXS with commentary about them, and I had forgotten how good they were, and how many hits they had. I guess Dylan is pretty good too though.

Now I tried yours, I only need search pages besides blog but it does not work. I tested it in Modern Theme plus in the latest K2 nighty built.
Bought my 40 geg two years ago and now I get a no license to play and I've tried to get in touch with Creative to upgrade the drive and I have gotten no where. If I knew the life expectancy on my mp3 player was only two years; I would of never bought it. The communication with Creative is terrible. The customer support is there for a new product but non existant for a two year old player... I am so disgusted, I may as well throw it away......Larry Warren

Perhaps you can help, either I did something wrong or your great plugin is simply not compatible with the template I'm using: Green - Elegancy 2.3 by Viajes

The search box does not show up on the page, not even in the Search all options page although there I do see the various checkboxes to allow me to search different things like pages, attachments, comments etc. The plugin has been activated but will not display, any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi Ian;

I don't know for certain why Linux distros don't include better support for a wider variety of wireless applications, as I'm not a developer for any distros, but I can surmise that it might partly be in the interests of combatting bloat and I also suspect that it's partly due to the lack of support for Linux specific drivers for many wireless cards. As far as the first is concerned, I don't expect that's likely to change, although perhaps some intepid soul will bundle better support as an easier-to-install package, and as far as the second is concerned we may have to wait for the manufacturers to catch up.

If your security needs are less stringent than mine (I wanted to use WPA2 for security) and you're satisfied with WEP for security, many wireless cards are already supported, so you might have better luck on that front. I'd also say that once you figure out what it is you need to do for the specific card you're using, the process itself isn't terribly onerous. So if you're setting up a network with homogeneous machines it may well be worth your while.

I am a primary school teacher who is (supposedly) responsible for the delivery of ICt at our small school. I am not in any way an "expert". I was looking into changing our laptops over from a windows platform to use edubuntu. However, they have to be able to connect to the web and to a printer wirelessly and having read the above and other postings about getting ubuntu to pick up a network make me shy away from even trying. Is it likely that a more "intuitive/automatic" method for locating and joining networks will be put into ubuntu?

Howdy Cory& the others,
thanks for this neat piece of code.
Is there any way to customize this plugin in a way that I could search other tables, like some made by other plugins?

I fall solidly on the side of "This must work in Ubuntu" without me jumping through hoops. It's absolutely ridiculous that something fault tolerant enough can't be built to a) recognize the hardware and b) note when something isn't working because you've changed hardware and then c) re-set the configuration to support the new hardware.

To say that someone has to know what they're doing to have the honor of using wireless is stupid and elitist to say the least and it goes directly against everything that Ubuntu stands for.

Hmm, my code didn't show up, must have been stripped during posting... it was basically a PHP statement that said:

If CONDITION {
 // format the result one way
} Else {
 // format the result another
}

So it's just a PHP expression I need for CONDITION

Thanks,
Guy

Hi there,

I *love* this plugin - does just what I wanted :-) One thing though - I'd like to be able to tell if a result is a page or something else (i.e. post or comment)... I don't really understand the whole debate about about checking is it's "static" as I'm not much of a coder... Would anyone be able to just tell me, if I have the following code what expression do I use instead of CONDITION to check whether it's a page? If it's a page CONDITION should be true (i.e. "format the result one way") otherwise it'll be false (i.e. "format the result another").

 // format the result one way

 // format the result another

Thanks so much in advance for your help and the AMAZING PLUGIN :-)

I've been using the Search All plugin for a while and like it a lot, but It's not working with WP 2.1

When searching for a term it brings up multiple results of the same posts.

I'm looking forward to an updated one.
