Geovid’s Video mp3 Extractor

In my last post I mentioned a free tool I discovered from www.geovid.com. It’s pretty easy to use; simply select the video you want to rip to audio, select a quality and bit-rate, and away you go. I’ve used it on a few videos, and the audio quality is fine, and it’s much faster than the very manual method I was using (which consisted of letting Windows Media Player play the video while Audacity recorded the output).

One thing to note, though, is that there’s one small bug that makes using the tool a little puzzling for ripping audio from wmv files. Files with the *.wmv file type do not show up in the “Open” dialog. I suspect this is because the “*.wmv” extension’s not included in the file type list. The developers are aware of the problem and will be fixing it, but I was able to work around it by typing the beginnings of the file name in the filename box (when in the correct directory). Windows would then auto-fill the file name and away I went.

To my knowledge, it’s a Windows only app; so sorry, Mac and Linux users….
