Doc’s newest podcast…

… is here. Don’t know that I’ll listen to this one - I’m not overly interested in KZSB, but that’s neither here nor there.

Actually I wanted to comment on 2 things.

Yesterday I called TDS Metrocom, our local phone and DSL carrier, who I’ve been nominally pleased with to this point. They had contacted us with one of those “you’re paying for out-moded services, call us to upgrade” letters a few weeks back - the second one. Never called the first time because I was suspicious of a high-pressure sales pitch, but apparently my resolve has weakened.

So I called them and was rewarded with an offer to move from 768kbps up to the 1 - 4 mbps range (touted as 4mbps on their website, but to the fellow on the line’s credit he consistently called it “1 to 4 mbps”). I get pretty near the stated target for the service I subscribe to (I get 626 down/630 up according to broadbandreports.com) so I figure I’ll get closer to the 4mbps than the 1 and perhaps my uploads will be even better than the 768kbps advertised upload speed.

To top that off, in a fit of optimism I mentioned the phrase “static IP”. When last I asked, a year ago, I pressured the fellow on the other end of the line somewhat but was told in no uncertain terms that static IPs were only available to business customers (the $150/month and up packages). This fellow immediately said “Yeah, I think we can do that”, and 10 minutes later and $5/month more, I’m the proud future owner of my very own IP address. For $5 more per month I could get up to 4 more. WooHoo, customer happy!

Of course the whole time on the phone I was thinking of Doc’s internet service tribulations, which seemingly continue. Poor Doc.

The other thing I wanted to mention, in case Doc is listening, is that WordPress does all the work of podcast subscriptions natively in WP1.5 and newer. So in point fo fact, while he may think that he’s not providing a subscription mechanism for his podcasts, he most certainly already is - as a quick glance at his RSS2 feed incontrovertibly shows.
