Hey Ed;

Thanks for your comments.

I agree that Steve's not wholly focused on monetization - what I meant was that early on that was a large part of his early evangelism seemed (to me) to focus on it, to the detriment (again, my thoughts only) of the overall, um, "movement".

I also don't necessarily think that Root is only interested in monetization, but I haven't seen anything compelling from them yet. Truth be told, I'm less interested in an intermediary between attention-givers and lead-seekers than I am in data interchange between services. If commerce enters the picture then I want tools that offer a framework for attention-sharing with vendors without direct monetary interest. I wish I'd been able to make it to VaultStock - I can't wait for geographical locale to be irrelevant in ability to attend events like that.

I'm looking forward to seeing some more players enter the field, but I'm afraid there won't be many for a while; the potential scaling issues will require serious players to be at least somewhat flush before they begin.

I'm toying with some extras to the basic attention toolkit, but I'd be happy to talk further.

Hey Cori,
Very thoughtful responses to Alex's list, but I have a different perspective on a few of your other points. First, I disagree with your take on Steve's focus. I talk with him regularly, and if anything he's less focused on monetization than most other players and thinkers in the space. Also, Root has said that lead generation will be one of their first verticals, but they fully realize that if that's the only space they're playing in, users won't be sufficiently motivated to participate. They demo'ed some cool user-focused features today at VaultStock, and I expec t they'll be rolled out soon.

I should make clear that I work closely with both Steve and Seth Goldstein of Root, who co-founded AttentionTrust and serve on its Board of Directors, but I also want to be clear that I'm not flacking for either of them--or for anyone. If I ever feel that someone is promoting an attention service as means of gaining access to users' data without fully respecting AttentionTrust's principles of user control, then I'll call them out so fast it will make their head spin.

One more thought: Root is currently the only attention service approved by AttentionTrust, but one of my primary goals is to expand that list as much as possible. There's no bureaucratic process involved in being approved by AttentionTrust--just contact me, agree to abide by our principles, and we'll get you on the list. Couldn't be simpler!

Finally, I'd like to put some more detailed info on our site describing how to roll-your-own attention service, similar to your attention cache--please drop me a line when you get a chance. Thanks!
