Dave goes off the rails

Dave Winer:

This press release is the first I heard that the EFF (apparently) would like to speak for podcasters. Watch out for the EFF, they tend to sell us out for the tech industry, an industry that has major conflicts with people and organizations that create content. When asked to help us out with Google their answer was “tough shit.” Hey they could have at least engaged in respectful discourse, but they clearly didn’t care what we think. I was pretty sure they’d eventually care. Now they do, and they’re trying to gloss over the fact that they haven’t got our support. I suppose Cory Doctorow speaks for some podcasters, but he sure doesn’t speak for me.

Dave’s off the rails here, as far as I’m concerned.  The press release fairly clearly indicates that the EFF is speaking only for podcasters who agree with what the EFF has to say (generally what “We, the undersigned” means).  As far as the EFF selling content producers out, I think that’s a gross generalization.  Dave references a comment about one podcast with Cory Doctorow and Robert Scoble, among others, regarding the Google AutoLink functionality.  While I generally agreed with Cory’s position in the whole AutoLink foofaraw, I also agree with the gist of the blog post Dave links to: Cory was definitely off the rails in the ITConversation podcast, without a whit ot intelligent argumentation to be had from him, merely a lot of shouting that seemingly made it so unpleasant to participate that the other speakers just gave up.  That said, I don’t recall Cory ever indicating that he was speaking for the EFF in that conversation, so to equate his behavior with the position of the EFF is pretty darn rich.  To top that off, Cory hasn’t worked for the EFF for many months, so he doesn’t even speak for them any more.

Seems to me that the EFF has plenty of support in the current effort so far, and the issue they’re trying to address an important one.  I wish Dave would forget previous slights of any kind and sign on here
